Steering Committee Meeting 6/16/2016

In attendance:

Francine Snyder – Rauschenberg Foundation

Jason Varone – IFA

Ralph Baylor – Frick

Louisa Wood Ruby – Frick

Gabriel Rodriguez – Columbia

Martha Hollander – Hofstra

Emily Spratt – Princeton

Kimon Keramidas – NYU

Maribel Hidalgo Urbaneja – University of Glasgow

New NYCDAH Website – art.nycdh.org

  • Now we have our own customizable wordpress theme.  Will better serve our purposes.  Could also make this a public facing site, Google searchable.
  • Do we want to make sure that only NY area people join?  This may be useful later on, especially if we start to attract hordes of members.

Fall Symposium

  • Rauschenberg Foundation – Art and technology.  50th anniversary of EAT (Experiments in Art and Technology).  October 14th-23rd was the original run of the armory exhibition, October 14th would be a great day for the symposium.
  • FS has started a conversation with Jer Thorp, also a connection with MIT (MIT Digital Group?)
  • Half-day: Intro, keynote, panel.  If possible some sort of meetup after the symposium, could have the panel discuss submissions.
  • ES brings up that the European Conference on Computer Vision is happening simultaneously.  Maybe we could hold it the next week.
  • Programming sounds like a lot to do in one day, perhaps we could have pre-submissions and vet the questions so that certain topics don’t monopolize the conversation.
  • Have to find a way to get a larger audience, but also to find computer scientists who are specifically interested in art historical research and pedagogy.  The overlap is not very large.  Perhaps we could engage on a broader level, undergraduate education for example.  People are going to be coming for teaching and for research.
  • Our original model was the New Museum’s 7 on 7 conference, artists and engineers collaborate.
  • KK is not in favor of a keynote speaker.  He believes that since we don’t have a large constituency yet we should have our local group present to outsiders.
  • FS: Can’t forget the Rauschenberg’s mission, need to talk about art and technology.  Could talk about how artists are using data, rather than just art historians.
  • Rauschenberg Foundation wants to livestream it.  IFA has a mobile livestream setup, but would stream through IFA website.
  • ES: Aim to record the status quo and see where we are headed.  Could publish and edit the conversations that we have, could archive them and come back to them later.
  • Could showcase projects by artists like Matthew Epler and then have an open conversation.
  • Deena Engel:  Computer scientist working at NYU, is working with her students at MoMA with old computer art, trying to update to view on current tech, interesting questions of artist’s intent.
  • ES: we could involve Rick Johnson, he scans the back of paintings and drawings and analyzes thread counts etc.
  • A discussion ensues concerning whether we should organize around CAA.
  • EAT datascape from SciencesPo.
